China's state broadcaster CCTV reported on Wednesday that heavy rain triggered by the remnants of Typhoon Dolphin has hit parts of central and eastern China, prompting emergency measures across several provinces.

In central Henan province, days of persistent downpours brought extremely heavy rain to parts of Yuzhou and Zhengzhou cities. CCTV said a flash flood struck a village in Yuzhou, sweeping away one villager. The person managed to call police while taking refuge in a tree and was later rescued by emergency workers using safety ropes, reports added.

In Zhengzhou, low-lying roads were waterlogged after continuous rain, with urban management and municipal teams working around the clock on drainage.

China's flood control authorities raised their emergency response levels for Henan.

Dolphin, the strongest typhoon to hit China this year, has weakened after travelling more than 6,000 km, but its remnants are drawing tropical moisture deep inland, raising the risk of flooding.

China, the world's second-largest economy, is increasingly exposed to destructive weather events that scientists link to climate change. This year is proving particularly tough due to the emergence of the El Niño weather pattern that is driving up temperatures and fuelling more frequent and intense typhoons.
